Viola stood before the bookshelf, a paper on a board in one hand, a pen in the other. It took a great deal of time, but she cataloged each book one by one. Once the sapling was planted and the magic of the Great Library flowed into this outpost, the list itself would become magical, automatically noting when a book was loaned out, and who it was loaned to, and so forth. The list would also be added to the archives in the Great Library itself, where a list of all the books in the Great Library and all the outposts were kept.

Only a few more days until the full moon and the night she could plant the sapling. Only a few more days until this library wasn’t so defenseless and she could finally breathe a bit easier.

At least the guards outside provided some reassurance. She wasn’t as alone as she had been when she first arrived. So far, Lord Chauvlyn hadn’t come anywhere near the outpost.

Which was suspicious, in and of itself. He seemed content to hassle Lady Olivia, but he hadn’t so much as approached the outpost. What could he possibly be planning?

If only she was cunning, like her sister Brigid. Then she could figure out what Lord Chauvlyn’s plan was instead of just sitting here, guarding the sapling and hoping she could head him off once he made his move.

Perhaps Lord Chauvlyn had made himself scarce since Duke Orsino had been such a frequent visitor to the outpost library the past few days.

As if on cue, Duke Orsino’s steady footsteps strolled behind her, halting a few feet away. “Good afternoon, Librarian Viola.”

She nodded to him, smiling. “Good afternoon. What brings you back so soon?”

He rocked back and forth, then held out a piece of paper. “My attempt at a poem. It isn’t very good, and it isn’t finished yet.”

Viola took the paper and steeled herself. No matter what, she wasn’t going to laugh. She wasn’t going to criticize. Just give constructive feedback where needed.

She quickly read the poem, schooling her features. It wasn’t bad. Not necessarily great, but not bad either. Just a bit stilted and stiff. A bit like the duke himself. Not given to flights of fancy or long-winded spiels.

But it still warmed something inside her, knowing how much work he put into it. And a few of the phrases…

No, this poem was for Olivia. Not for her.

“This is a good, solid start for a poem.” Viola handed the page back. “I can see where the work over the past few days has paid off.”

“But do you think Olivia will appreciate it?” Duke Orsino glanced between her and the paper he held.

Viola hesitated. She didn’t want to promise anything when she couldn’t be sure how Olivia would take this poem.

If anything, Olivia wouldn’t like it, since she loved Sebastian.

But Viola didn’t want to hurt Duke Orsino by telling him that particular truth. “How could she not appreciate the time and effort you put into this?”

She snapped her mouth shut before she added, I certainly do.
